Tuesday, November 3 // ELECTION DAY

Voting Eligibility

  • You can vote in person in an Indiana election, if:

  • You are a U.S. Citizen; AND

  • You are a resident of Indiana; AND

  • You will be at least 18 years of age at the next General Election, November 3, 2020; AND

  • You are not currently in prison after being convicted of a crime; AND

  • You have lived in the precinct where you vote for at least 30 days before the election (*); AND

  • You are registered to vote

  • Have a current Photo ID (ID Requirements below)

*Residency & Voter ID. It is NOT required that an ID address match the voter registration. However, if the address does not match the poll worker might ask the voter if they have recently moved and can help update their registration. A mis-matched address between the voter registration record and the photo ID is NOT enough of a reason to deny someone a ballot.

What do I need to do to vote? You must first register to vote. You can register to vote atindianavoters.in.gov. On this website you can also check the status of your voter registration, find a polling place, request an absentee ballot form, learn what is on your ballot and get information about your voting rights.

What do I do if I recently changed my name, recently moved or unsure if I am registered to vote? You can check the status and update your voter registration indianavoters.in.gov. Voter registrations and any updates must be completed by October 5.

WHERE DO I VOTE?

Voting Early: You can vote Early at any Voting Center beginning October 6. Day, evening, and weekend early voting hours are offered.  To find the 2020 Early Voting sites go to: vote.indy.gov/Vote-Centers.

On Election Day: Voters can vote at any polling place open on Election Day. The 2020 Election Polling locations can be found here: vote.indy.gov/Vote-Centers.

ID REQUIREMENTS FOR VOTING

Requirements: A current photo ID is required of all voters casting a ballot in person. There are exceptions for certain confined voters and voters casting absentee ballots by mail. Acceptable forms of ID include: driver’s license, passport, military ID or picture ID from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The criteria for acceptable ID include:

  • Photograph

  • A name which matches the voter registration record

  • An expiration date after Election Day (November 3, 2020)

  • A student ID from an Indiana State school may only be used if it meets all of the criteria specified above.

  • A student ID from a private institution may not be used for voting purposes.

What if I do not have a valid Photo ID? If you do not possess an ID that is acceptable for voting purposes, Public Law 109-2005 requires the BMV issue a free Indiana State ID Card. To obtain this ID card from any BMV license branch, you will need to supply the necessary documentation. To find the closest BMV branch and locations hours visit in.gov/bmv/branch-locations-and-hours

Assistance for obtaining a valid ID: VoteRiders (voteriders.org) is providing 100% free assistance towards obtaining documents (such as birth certificates, change of name records), arranging rides to and from ID–issuing offices. Contact Vote Riders by phone at 844-338-8743.

Absentee Voting

Absentee voting eligibility: The pandemic is not an eligible reason to vote absentee in Indiana. Allowable reasons a voter may request an absentee ballot include:

  • Will be out of the county on Election Day

  • Caring for or confined to a residence, a health care facility, or a hospital due to illness or injury

  • Have a disability

  • Age 65 or older

  • Member of the military or a public safety office

  • Serving as a poll worker

  • Lack transportation to get to the polls.

I meet one of the eligible reasons to vote Absentee. How do I vote absentee?

Voters may request an absentee-by-mail (ABS-Mail ballot) at www.indianavoters.in.gov or by using a paper application. The deadline to submit an absentee application request is October 22, 2020 by 11:59pm, however Absentee Ballots should be requested as soon as possible.

Absentee-by-Mail Voting. After requesting a ballot received in the mail, the voter should complete their ballot and return it in the provided official envelope. The return envelope MUST be signed by the voter and be received by noon on Election Day, November 3, 2020. (Postmarks do not count).

Due to mail delays, voters are encouraged to hand-deliver their absentee ballots.  Absentee ballots can be dropped off at any Early Voting site, Election Day Polling location or the Election Service Center located at 3737 E. Washington St. Voting Centers can be found here: vote.indy.gov/Vote-Centers. A photo ID is not required when voting ABS-Mail.
