Jazz has deep roots on Indianapolis’s Near East Side, shaped by the historic African American cultural corridor along Indiana Avenue. From the 1930s through the 1960s, this area was a nationally recognized hub, home to vibrant clubs that hosted both local talent and touring legends, including Wes Montgomery. Nearby corridors like 10th Street played a vital supporting role, serving as neighborhood gathering spaces where music, social clubs, and informal venues kept jazz woven into everyday life. As redevelopment reshaped Indiana Avenue in the mid-20th century, the legacy of jazz lived on along streets like 10th, sustained by local musicians and residents in more grassroots, community-centered ways. Jazz Journey brings the community together to honor and celebrate this enduring legacy.

This event is independently curated by St. Clair Neighborhood Association.
